The Marol Academy

Statement of Purpose

The measure of an individual is how he or she stands for others.

The Marol Academy, an official 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization, was incorporated October 23, 2007, for the purpose of re-establishing schools in rural South Sudan, where primary and secondary education was violently disrupted by civil war in 1983.

The Marol School, the first project of the Marol Academy, emphasizes enrollment of girls first, as the literacy rate for females in South Sudan is less than 2%. The founder of the school, Jok Madut Jok, believes that to build healthy communities, states, and a nation, girls must be educated equally with boys. Therefore, schools we support must offer an accessible and safe environment for the education of girls.

Three specific emphases of the Marol School, along with academic achievement are:

1. HIV/AIDS and public health awareness, particularly as it relates to female health issues
2. Ecological and sustainable environmental training.
3. Non-violent, peaceable conflict resolution within and between communities.
